Obtain your COE Overview

In order to qualify for a VA-backed loan you must first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE).

In addition to completing the application, certain evidence is required to prove eligibility. According to the VA:

Requirements to Obtain your COE

  • If you are a Veteran, a DD Form 214 is required. Security America Mortgage is also happy to assist Veterans complete DD Form 214 correctly so the application is not rejected.
  • If you are a Current or former National Guard or Reserve member who has been activated Federal active service, a DD Form 214 is required. Security America Mortgage is also happy to assist in helping you complete DD Form 214 correctly so the application is not rejected.
  • If you are an Active Duty service member, a current statement of service signed by (or by the direction of): the adjutant, personnel office, or commander of the unit or higher headquarters showing your full name, social security number, date of birth, entry date on active duty, the duration of any lost time, and the name of the command providing the information if required.
  • If you are a Current National Guard or Reserve member who has never been Federal active services, a statement of service signed by (or by the direction of): the adjutant, personnel office, or commander of the unit or higher headquarters showing your full name, social security number, date of birth, entry date on active duty, the duration of any lost time, and the name of the command providing the information is required.
  • If you are a Discharged member of the National Guard who has never been activated for Federal active service the following is required: NGB Form 22, Report of Separation and Record of Service for each period of National Guard service or NGB Form 23, Retirement Points Accounting, and proof of the character of service.
    If you are a Discharged member of the Select Reserve who has never been activated for Federal active service a copy off your latest annual retirement points statement and evidence of honorable service.
  • If you are a Surviving spouse of a service member who died on active duty and if you’re already receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), you don’t need to send any documents. If you don’t receive DIC a copy of the DD Form 1300 (Report of Casualty) for the military and a copy of your marriage certification is required.
  • It would be a good idea to add a simple signed statement saying that you would like to apply for DIC. If you qualify for the home loan benefit, you probably qualify for monthly payments under DIC. Please make sure to put the service members Social Security number of all documents.
  • If you are a Surviving spouse of a Veteran who died as a result of military service and if you’re already receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), a copy of your award letter is required. Generally, you will already have a record on file at a VA reginal benefits office. If you don’t receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), a copy of the Veterans DD Form 214 is required along with a copy of the Veterans death certificate and a copy of your marriage certificate is required. The VA recommends that you add a simple signed statement saying that you would like to apply for DIC. If you qualify for the home loan benefit, you probably qualify for the monthly payments under DIC. Also ensure that you put the Veterans Social Security number on all documents.
